pumpkins and ghosties and ghouls

I don't like Halloween. I know that this along with the fact that I don't love Autumn makes me a hopelessly grumpy old bastard but I don't care. Normally I hide at halloween. I turn down invitations, refuse to entertain the notion of dressing up and turn all the lights off in case the neighbour's kids see that we're in and turn up on our doorstep expecting sweets in exchange for doing bugger all besides donning a flammable polyester 'costume' that will be in the bin come tomorrow mornin. Bah humbug.

This halloween I won't hide though, I won't hide because one of my very favouritest ladies is coming to town from way way over the ocean and we will meet and we will cake and we will chat and we will coffee and we will explore my favourite city which doesn't need silly old halloween because it is proper spooky and scary and there are ghosties down every alleyway and ancient haunted graveyards on every corner.

  1. i like halloween if i can figure out a good costume and there's a fun party to go to. but this year we decided to skip halloween and get out of town instead for much needed R&R. that photograph is awesome!

  2. Ugh I loathe Halloween, every year I just wish it would get over with so the stores can replace that wasted shelf space with Christmas treats!

  3. I'm meh on Halloween. I used to love it, now I like some of the trappings of Halloween (spicy cider, popcorn balls, pumpkin cookies) but on the actual day of I hide in my house.

  4. I don't really 'do' halloween. It came late in my childhood to Trinidad and my snobby self decided it was an Americanism I could do without. (Unlike very many others...) I do like yummy pumpkin-y goodies though and I wish I could get more of them. (Or be bothered to make them.)

But every time of year is better with a favourite person. And Edinburgh is awesome.

  8. I haven't commented before but just had to agree on Halloween, I love Autumn but 5th November is much more my thing (if you remove any chance of seeing kids playing with fireworks). And your spooky Edinburgh picture has made me miss living in the city that little bit more than I do already - nothing like the 'burgh for eeriness when that sea mist rolls in.

  12. I didn't grow up with it, didn't do anything about it when I moved to the States, and then continued to ignore it the first three years of Noah's life. And then he got wind of what he was missing out on. (Mainly the heaps of candy.)

So, on Halloween night,we get together with friends who have kids about the same age, have an early dinner, drink copious amounts of wine, and then venture out into the night, following our sugar-crazed children and not caring so much because...well. We like our wine.

Beautiful photograph by the Husband.... Enjoy your visit with your friend.

  14. I lub 'Ween. But not the sexy bunny parts or the scary mask parts. Just the nice cat mask parts and the bobbing for apples parts and the eating doughnuts parts.

And also the tromping in Embra with Peonies parts. I can't think of any better 'weens. Lovies to you.
