Project House and Marital Discord.

Project Make House Habitable is coming along really well, every day we stand and stare at a bit that's finished and say exactly the same things (which are really boring things that will interest no one) in awe of the fact that's SOMETHING IS ACTUALLY FINISHED(ish).

On Monday we painted our kitchen alcove/eating nook the most beautiful shade of grey (it's called Elephant's Breath, it's so pretty) and now we need a print for above the table. We also need a table. And chairs. But priorities people.

We want something super bright, something yellow or pink or orange, something bright enough to make your eyes tingle a little. Something like these...

(except the last one wouldn't work in the kitchen and I want to put it in the nursery)

We agree that the 50 ft woman is amazing and we must have her, but I'm not sure I want to eat under her every day. And then we reach marital discord.

N claims he 'doesn't know enough' about Brigitte to be sure if he wants a poster of her in our house. While 'she had great hair and THE POSTER'S THE RIGHT COLOUR' seem like perfectly convincing reasons to me they're not enough for him.

And apparently Lolita is 'inappropriate' for a nursery. WTF? I say he's just plain wrong. But apparently that sort of reasoning isn't allowed in marriage and we have to make a decision that we're both happy with. Again, WTF?

I think we've exhausted All Posters repertoire so what I want to know is where else should we look? Where can we find prints and posters online that are a little different? We're thinking graphic design, typography, films and books and music. Not so much with the photography, we will buy that straight from photographers.

Thanks chickens.

  1. I think I have to agree with your boy in that Lolita is entirely inappropriate for a nursery, fabulous book though it is. But Bridget rocks.
    Try these: http://ciaracreative.com/work_things_she_says.html

  7. I recently discovered that you can buy prints of pages and covers from most of the old Ladybird books from this site:

    http://www.ladybirdprints.com/

Realise that they are a quite distinctive style though which you either like or don't, but maybe good for a nursery....

London Transport Museum shop has some fabulous retro graphic-y ones too, great bold designs and bright colours.

  11. I'm a little loath to mention these as husband is a collector but Polish and Cuban film posters are worth seeking out - really original interpritations of films and in beautiful handpainted colours.
They can be found on ebay, sometimes if you are lucky for a steal. Cuban silk screen printed ones are the best for their lovely texture and colours but hard to get hold of. YOu can find some good examples here
    http://cubanposterart.blogspot.com/
    or hunt ebay.
For polish and Czech ones look on these sites for great examples:

  12. Have you looked at surface view for prints? http://www.surfaceview.co.uk/bespoke/#imagecollections

They have a good selection of stuff from the V&A, including Edward Lear's alphabet series which I think would be lovely for a nursery.

But for bright stuff, check out the 'land of lost content' collection.

  16. My favourite 'bright' poster ( a lovely eggy yellow) is the poster for James Stewart's 'Harvey'. I've always wanted it really big for my home when I finally get it, and is from the classic era of movie poster design. Wonderful film, too, with an awesome message.

  18. http://postercabaret.com/index.aspx Has loads of excellent stuff. My opinion though obviously.

We have a Flight of the Conchords poster in the 'nursery' (really it's just his bedroom?). Until he's old enough to choose, he'll have what we like ;)

  20. What's wrong with Lolita? That's what I want to know.

My effing work computer won't let me comment and link, but Babypicture this, THANK YOU for poster cabaret. There's a Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings poster by Methane Studio that I WANT. (Which also happens to match your colour requirements. Huh.) Also the ABCs print by Eleanor Grosch? Gorgeous. (And 'appropriate'.)

  22. i was looking for bright, large art (preferably an old movie poster) for my kitchen as well and never found anything quite right. i ended up buying shepard fairey's make art not war poster and putting it in my living room instead. i love the brigitte ones though- i might steal. my husband collects music posters and such. you can try gigposters.com.
ps. love the lolita, but have to agree with the boy on that one. :)

  23. I must agree that there is something a bit off-kilter with having Lolita in one's nursery. It just seems a little off...

  26. Hi Peonies,

I had a hippy party once and for decoration I printed the covers of the 60's magazine Oz. There are a few quite rude ones in there but I thought they were cool and colourful. You might have trouble getting some high res copies though. Just Google Oz magazine for inspiration.

    Loving the Lolita poster btw.

  27. p.s. Peonies - for tables and chairs, have you ever been to Sam Burns in Prestonpans? It's a furniture scrapyard and sells _everything_ from antiques to modern office furniture, all from house and office clearances. We got our coffee table there for £8. We also got all the funky glass dishes for our wedding from there, for like 25p each. It's totally worth a look if you're on this side of the country! http://samburns.co.uk/
