I was twenty one years when I wrote this song
I'm twenty two now, but I won't be for long
People ask when will you grow up to be a man
But all the girls I loved at school
are already pushing prams
I loved you then as I love you still
Though I put you on a pedestal,
They put you on the pill
I don't feel bad about letting you go
I just feel sad about letting you know
I don't want to change the world
I'm not looking for a new England
I'm just looking for another girl
I loved the words you wrote to me
But that was bloody yesterday
I can't survive on what you send
Every time you need a friend
I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them but they were only satellites
Is it wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care
I don't want to change the world
I'm not looking for a new England
I'm just looking for another girl.
Surely some of the best lyrics ever written. I could listen to this song every day and twice on Sundays.
lovely.....smiles

ReplyDeleteI must hear this. great lyrics, thank you.
ReplyDeletewell that's beautiful. sad and hauntingly beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThis song instantly makes me think of my Dad and his playing this really loud and singing along. thanks for the memory x
ReplyDeletelove billy bragg.
ReplyDeletei never actually heard the space hardware part. i like that.
ReplyDeletewe saw billy bragg at a folk fest in vancouver when i was 13 or something. my stepmother got a MASSIVE CRUSH and bought all his tapes.
ReplyDelete@eastside the space hardware bit is the BEST bit.
ReplyDelete@Rob, yes, yes you must. Post haste.
I've been thinking about this song a lot lately, but keep forgetting to sit down and listen to it. I just did. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove these lyrics!
ReplyDeleteKirsty MacColl version is even better if you ask me. I remember hearing BBragg do this at the Celtic Connections festival club (when it was at that horrible Holiday Inn at Charing Cross) about 4 years ago though, that WAS pretty special.

ReplyDeleteI love Billy too.
ReplyDeleteG played just before him at Glastonbury so I took the opportunity to get him to sign my boots when he came backstage. He handed them back and said "there you go kid", I nearly died.
His roadie had Billy's signature tattooed on his leg, that's a bit weird.
Another Billy Bragg lover. Beautiful.
ReplyDelete@downtomysoul I'm going to need to see those boots.
You all say Billy and all I can think of is Paul.
ReplyDelete...and time carries on/and the leaves that are green turn to brown.
