quack.

I can totally see what you have against us buying a houseboat. I mean, it's not like they're the cosiest, more romantic places to live in the world ever. Or like ducks look in your window. Or anything cool like that.
(I know, I know, bad investment. Bite me.)

  1. I have nothing against houseboats, I think they're beyond perfect. I used to live in a flat overlooking lots of them and it seemed like the most free idyllic life.

  2. PLEASE live in a house boat! If for no other reason than the fact is that I CAN'T and someone I really like to read must do it so I can live vicariously through that wonderfulness.

  3. My friend lived on a houseboat for a while. She loved it, but her boyfriend tired of having to shower at the gym before work :)

    (she rented it out)

  4. I live on a narrowboat in Cambridge (a houseboat is specifically a boat that doesn't move and ours most certainly does!)
Not a day goes by when I don't think how incredibly lucky I am to live how and where I do. I blog about life here:

    1. To add, I can't tell from this post if you gone ahead and bought a boat, but if you are still thinking about it and want some advice from someone who's been there, feel free to get in touch!
      All the best!

  5. I don't know about now but I know living in a houseboat would be the most magically amazing thing when one is little.

  6. huh, what a coincidence. This houseboat is about 5 minutes away from my house in Amsterdam. I wouldn't be too tempted to live on a houseboat, even if its just for practical reasons (not always connected to the sewer, people who use boats in Amsterdam don't need a permit and bump into yours, etc), but I agree wrt how romantic it is.

  9. I for one approve of houseboating. Perhaps because I'm American and it's just something I never ever see except when abroad. So jealous.

  10. GUYS, we haven't *bought* a houseboat, we've just been daydreaming about it. See Thispost.

  11. Do it. It may not be practical or the best investment, but if you don't do it now when will you?

  12. Fuck investment. Where exactly has investment got us? Up shit creek, that's where. And if you're going to be up shit creek, you might as well already have a boat.

  14. They say the two best days of your life are the day you get a boat and the day you get rid of a boat.

But swoon, if those pictures don't make me automatically want to pack my life up, buy a houseboat, and get to living on it stat.

  15. That is utterly charming. I think you need to get in touch with Amy about what it's like. You know, just in case.

  16. Will you put my name on the waiting list to visit?

  17. Yes , there is something kind of magical about a house boat, you would expect a fairy tale character to live in one. You know, this old man who would tell stories, that came from the water.

  18. my family went houseboating when i was little and my sister (who always rolled out of her top bunk and hit the floor when we were in our regular house) rolled out of her top bunk, hit the floor with a crash which sounded like we'd taken a torpedo, woke the whole boat, and caused us to rock back and forth on the lake for the next hour. i won't lie, it was amazing.

  19. If we have to move out of our current house I'm trying to convince my husband that we should live in a houseboat, a yurt, or a house bus. Houseboat is my first choice!

  20. nothing is a good investment these days, and so you should buy a houseboat.

this logic is sound, trust me. i'm a mathematician.

  21. I'm with you. Houseboats all the way. Houseboats with ducks.

  22. I WANT YOU TO BUY A HOUSEBOAT. Yep.

  23. I think you should buy a houseboat. You can always count on me on that front. I mean, I was sold anyway, but the duckie? SOLD X2!

  24. I'd rather have ducks for neighbours any damn day.

  25. We had friends, twin sisters, who lived on a houseboat throughout their 4 years at uni in London. They loved it. It was awesome! Sadly they actually cost quite a bit of money in London according to this site: http://www.findaproperty.com/displaystory.aspx?edid=00&salerent=0&storyid=7749 but some have gardens on top of them!!!! If it means you can move to London, why not?!

  26. I say get the boat! I have been following your blog for sometime now and always find your stories so inspiring. We just moved abroad (to Canada) and are on the verge of having to move back again (to London) because of practicalities (Visas) but have not totally abandoned our dream of living in the mountains somewhere (its just having to go back on hold so we can afford to eat (and hopefully have babies as lovely as yours- hello NHS!). You guys are such an amazing family, I am sure you will find your place in the world.
