holiday planning.

I can not, will not, must not spend another winter entirely in the UK. I just can't. Every year I think 'I've just got to get through to solstice/Christmas/New Year/my birthday/the end of February and it will be nearly spring and I'll be fine. But the truth is, I get to the end of February and I feel so completely bruised by the preceding four months that the fact that it's nearly Spring is no comfort at all and it's only in mid-May that I stop feeling traumatised.

I know it sounds extreme to react to winter so badly and in theory I know; it's not that bad, stop being a big pansy, but I hate it. I hate the cold and the short days but most of all I hate the lack of sun when there are daylight hours. It's noticeable as soon as there is a bright day that I feel like a different, happier, person. A person who stops questioning her life and her career and her every decision, who stops wondering why she isn't happy, a person to whom it suddenly becomes obvious 'I'm not unhappy, I've just been IN THE DARK FOR THE LAST THREE MONTHS.'

About 6 weeks ago I was so close to taking out a credit card just to pay for us to Go Somewhere. I've never had a credit card in my life but this seemed like a genuine necessity. It was only that I was too tired to organise dinner let alone a holiday that stopped me. At that point I swore to Nye that I was NOT spending all of next winter in the UK, that we had to go somewhere where there was sunshine for a week at the beginning of February. That, I figured, would be enough to tide me through to Spring. Thankfully he agreed that yes, it probably was a necessity.

So I've started thinking about next winter with something other than utter dread. We have neither a tonne of money or the inclination to spend more than four hours on a plane, so that rules out anywhere tropical. If you draw a circle around London that is eight hours wide, the furthest you can cheaply get where there will be sunshine in February is the Canaries in one direction and Turkey in the other (and Northern Mali in the other direction but as of yet, I don't think Shitty Air fly there.) Morocco appeals, because we know it and love it and have been talking about taking the girls there since before they were born (And it's cheap. And I really want to stay at Maryam's place, which isn't cheap but which is probably worth going into debt for), but I feel like maybe we should try something new, something adventurous

Does anyone have any suggestions? Our budget is small but so are our needs. When we went to Morocco we stayed in backpackers hotels that cost £3 per person per night and where you shared a bathroom with the whole floor. I'd like to upgrade on that trip slightly, maybe with a bathroom to ourselves (the luxury!). But 'basic' is what we're going for, we're in it for the sunshine and the food. No cities, preferably a beach, ideally warm enough to run around naked.

Answers on a postcard please.

  1. Sicily, a Greek island, Madeira. Not sure how warm but you would definitely get longer days and probably more sunshine.

    1. Hmmmm, Sicily. I wonder how warm it is in February?

  2. Over here we call what ails you Seasonal Affective Disorder. But I'm guessing you knew that.

Sicily wouldn't have sunshine? California would, of course:).

    1. ah yes, S.A.D. I just call it Being British. California would indeed, but a) air fares, b) So Many Hours Away.

  3. Go to Turkey. We went to Istanbul last September and I am in love with the place.
I wrote several post about our finds(including one fully about cats! And the hospital where Florence Nightingale worked). The city is very lively, full of history, warm, friendly and hip (if you walk towards the Galata tower from the sea, you will see what I mean). The food is delicious. And they have lovely beaches along the coast, and landscapes....
Otherwise, Italy, Morocco, Greece or the South of France are always great options.
I will happily send you a postcard if you send me your address :)

  4. how about the south of spain? i flew from heathrow to malaga and it was fab. but that was in 2005, and in june it was sweltering.

that photo you posted made me want to cry. i'm in new england, and i'm guessing the winters are as depressing as old england's.

    1. Yes, I think they are. We've been to Malaga before, I'm not sure I liked it enough to go back. Maybe elsewhere in the south of spain though.

  5. We spent a week in Sharm el Sheikh at the start of Feb and it was ace. No real culture but that wasn't why we went. 5 hour flight, guaranteed sun, amazing snorkelling, and they really really love kids. I know Egypt feels a bit dodge but Sharm really is a little bubble and cut off from the rest...

    1. There's no way I'd ever get Nye to 'a little bubble cut off from the rest'! He's all about the authenticity!

  6. Malta is lovely and would be a nice, mid teens type temp. If you're not too bothered about cultural bits, we went on a last minute, sun craving holiday to Oman about 5 years ago. It's hot and mostly all inclusive but we got a ludicrously cheap deal so went for it. For a lying around by the pool kinda break it was hard to beat. x

    1. That sounds pretty good. I'd imagine that the flight is longer than we can cope with with 3 year olds though.

  8. I would not recommend Turkey in the winter - flat out freezing, and most places make you pay to turn on the heat!

  9. I am no help here... suffering the same I'm afraid and the Berlin winters are looong. We looked into escaping for a bit and found this website http://adioso.com/ where you can put in flexible or fixed dates and search flights to anywhere or somewhere warm and it gives you all the possibilities. Then we decided we couldn't afford it this year :)

PS friend of mine recently got a daylight lamp and is cured. I'm dubious.

  10. I went to Corfu once is February from the freezing misery of Yorkshire and it was just warm enough to get in the ocean and wear red bathing suit and read lots on the beach. And the food!

    1. yeah, but it seems a little drastic! And we just spend All Of The Money moving to London.

  12. Or if not up for total life upheaval, I suggest Cabo de Gata in Spain. Beautiful, cheap and you can swim naked.

  15. If you were willing to put in a couple more hours, and probably a stop, there's the west coast of India waiting for you. Goa, Kerala, etc.

I think the economics fill up most nearby warm spots with sunshine factories for Northern Europeans.

    1. No. No flights to India. Also they cost roughly 3 times the price of flights to Europe/North Africa.

  16. We went here with our toddler: http://www.lanzaroteretreats.com/info/about/eco-retreat/

The place is lovely, great for kids (they have chickens and a donkey!) and there's a beach in walking distance. Lanzarote is a four-hour flight, which was just about the maximum I could stand with my daughter.

We went is September, when it was still very warm, but it should be sunny and warm in mid-winter too.

  17. Just wanted to say - hey, I get you. I threw a wobbly this winter and made my husband agree to a winter sun break. I am a New Zealander and so not used to these bleak as UK winters. They SUCK as far as I am concerned!
It did help! Especially getting through my birthday/Christmas/NY, which is the toughest time for me. Gave me a goal.
We headed to Dubai early Feb and it was brill.
I have a SAD light as well which does help me a lot.
Hope the wedding went well today.

  18. Oh, how I can relate top this. Spending the entire winter in Switzerland is beyond depressing to me. The dark, the cold, the snow, the cold, the humidity... and have I mentioned the cold? But spending the whole winter in Switzerland after barely traveling at all during the previous fall and summer is enough to make me want to slit my wrists.

I need sun! So we are considering driving down to Milan during the easter weekend, which is madness because Milan, isn't a whole lot warmer and hardly anything will be open on Easter Sunday and Monday... but damn it, I'll take it.
Though I'd much rather dive into that pic you shared up there :-)

  19. I hear you on the dark. Apparently this was the greyest winter here (Zurich) in 70 years. And now the rain has started.

Like you, I swear this will be my last winter without an escape to sun.

What about Majorca? It can be cheap and I think it's pretty reliably sunny. Or Sardinia or Corsica?

  20. I don't have any suggestions, but I can commiserate with your feelings on winter. I'm moving to Arizona, I just can't take anymore winter, ever.

    1. Good move. I just left Arizona, and am desperately sad (and SAD, I guess) about it.

    2. I lived there for 7 years, having moved there from New Hampshire. My husband and I moved to New Hampshire in August 2011 and immediately regreted it. Can't wait to get back!

  21. After the misery all bank holiday weekend last week (even though technically Northern Ireland is UK, we do get some Irish perks), I had exactly the same feeling. Trapped in the house by the cold and rain, I totally understand how all the existential questions may sneak up like unwelcome guests.

  22. I was a foolish person who once went backpacking in Morocco in AUGUST. Incredible country, horrific heat so we escaped to the coastline of Essaouira and it was absolute perfection. All the magic of Morocco with BREEZE. I can't remember where we stayed but there are some great guest houses for not much more than hostels. If you loved Morocco as much as I did, this would be a great introduction for your girls.

    1. In August, I would recommend Essaouira as well. Not in winter, though! We went there in May and I understood pretty soon why they sold woolen hats and cardigans at the markets. People told us that it's a cold place which just heats up sometimes...

  23. Croatia. It is beyond pretty, it is authentic and it is warm. We did it with a little hire car and a tent, the campsites are incredible (£5 a night!)and brilliant for kids too. or private rental apartments are v cheap. Fab beaches, nice food, laid back vibe. Cheap. There is nothing not to like about it. I can recommend places to stay, can email you them if you fancy.

    1. My mother-in-law just got back from Croatia and was showing us pictures last night. She was near the border of Italy, and she must have said ten times how cold it was! Winter coats, hats, etc. She talked about it so much that it seemed that the cold weather is what left the biggest impression on her! Looks pretty though. She just found it very cold in March.

    2. Plus she said it was grey almost the entire time. And rainy. Maybe not the ideal escape from London in the winter....

  25. Have you considered looking on i-escape.com? They're my go-to for holiday porn and they have a really good family travel section. Hope it's useful :)

  26. Having suppressed my Canaries snobbery we booked a week here http://www.villa-amatista.com/ one February half term. I was pleasantly surprised by the island and the children loved it. Would definitely return for cheap winter sun!
I would also recommend i-escape and also sawdays.co.uk.
Currently trying to plan an escape for winter this year and we haven't even had summer yet!

  27. Cabo Verde? You can normally find something on Travelzoo and it's that bit further south for sunshine...
