Whenever I mention shopping in New York the Boy rolls his eyes and gives me that look. That look that says we can't afford the trip, never mind any shopping. And I give him that look that says phooey.
Having said that I don't really like spending money. I do however like looking at pretty things in pretty places. I like browsing and lingering and touching and dreaming then putting back and feeling relieved that there are still some pennies in my piggy bank and that guilt, anxiety and poverty (the natural consequences of buying things) remain neatly folded in my purse, tucked away with all of those shiny plastic cards.
What are your favourite shops in New York? Your favourite places to browse and touch and wander and dream.

* I know I said it would be a week. I was wrong. New York fortnight? month? whatever, continues and will do so for as long as I have questions that you wonderful lovelies keep answering. I will be posting some other bits and bobs among my travel dreams this week too though.

Ninth Street! East Village. Between 2nd ave and ave A. I love Pink Olive on 9th between 1st ave and ave a especially.
ReplyDeleteOh I feel the same way about shopping! Have so much fun! I will be living vicariously through your trip.
ReplyDeleteat least the exchange works in your favor, right?
ReplyDeletegreat shots
ah, all those shops look so gorgeous... the rainbow of dresses! i have no new york advice to give, but i will be living vicariously through you when you go...
ReplyDeletePurl. I love Purl.
ReplyDeleteJohn Derien in the East Village.
ReplyDeletePink Olive is dangerously close to me and is so great! Next door to it is Cloak & Dagger...a great local designer and really lovely pieces. East Village is great for shopping as is Brooklyn Flea (Market) and Orchard/Ludlow St area.
ReplyDeleteSigh if you're in midtown - Henri Bendel and Saks are institutions. I do love wandering around good 'ol Anthropologie and random places in the West Village (Bleecker close to 9th Ave). There's everything from my favorite Coach store to a Mint store to a small lovely leather goods store I can't remember the name of...either way have fun!
ReplyDeletefor nesting, abc carpet & home (union square) is a marvelous, inspirational wander. the future perfect, in williamsburg and now also in noho, is much smaller but equally so - and it has the advantage of being across the street from the prettiest thai restaurant in all the land (sea thai, crowded for dinner but doable for lunch). i also love evolution (for beetles, crystallized ammonites, and all things natural and beautiful) and kiosk, a crazy international swap meet of sorts, both in soho.
ReplyDeleteAll your posts are making me want to go back to NYC!
ReplyDeleteI feel slightly silly posting this, but I have to admit I love going to Williamsburg to window shop. There are some cute little boutiques, and sometimes there are street vendors with cool wares.
ReplyDeleteIn the West Village, Greenwich Letterpress is amazing and one of my favorite stores. Soho has Calypso Au Marche... which can have some amazing deals (I got Porsche vintage sunglasses and Ted Lapidus vintage sunglasses super on sale). Economy Candy on the Lower East Side is SO much fun and completely guilt free in terms of cost (although maybe guilt comes with the candy calories!). Plus, it is close to The Dressing Room Boutique and Bar, which is fabulous (on Orchard).
ReplyDeleteI could go on and on! Enjoy!
Purl Soho for (pricy but beautiful) yarn
ReplyDeleteJohn Derian for (pricy but gorgeous) ephemera and housewares
ABC Carpet and Home for windowshopping and to drool over all the beautiful things
Blue Tree (http://www.bluetreenyc.com/ the website is ugly, but don't be put off)-- a little boutique in the upper east side, full of all sorts of whimsical and wonderful things, from mittens that look like dragons when you put them on, to elephant-shaped pillow, to vintage shoes, and so on. Definitely worth the trip. And it's right next to an amazing bookshop called Corner.
Kate's Paperie for paper goods
Bendels and Bergdorf Goodmans for an old-fashioned New York experience
I am in love with that city. Why is there no fashion in Seattle? Here is one of my fav shops in New York.
