I'm really needing one of you to have this as a wedding reading. Preferrably one of you who is having us photograph your wedding. Thanks.
(yes, you will need some pretty cool friends to read it. Or a celebrant with a sense of humour. Ooooh, or a couple of pretty cool, pretty talented friends to
sing it for you. Fuck yeah!)
In Spite of Ourselves, by John Prine.
She don't like her eggs all runny
She thinks crossin' her legs is funny
She looks down her nose at money
She gets it on like the Easter Bunny
She's my baby I'm her honey
I'm never gonna let her go
He ain't got laid in a month of Sundays
I caught him once and he was sniffin' my undies
He ain't too sharp but he gets things done
Drinks his beer like it's oxygen
He's my baby
And I'm his honey
Never gonna let him go
In spite of ourselves
We'll end up a'sittin' on a rainbow
Against all odds
Honey, we're the big door prize
We're gonna spite our noses
Right off of our faces
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes.
She thinks all my jokes are corny
Convict movies make her horny
She likes ketchup on her scrambled eggs
Swears like a sailor when shaves her legs
She takes a lickin'
And keeps on tickin'
I'm never gonna let her go.
He's got more balls than a big brass monkey
He's a wacked out werido and a lovebug junkie
Sly as a fox and crazy as a loon
Payday comes and he's howlin' at the moon
He's my baby I don't mean maybe
Never gonna let him go
In spite of ourselves
We'll end up a'sittin' on a rainbow
Against all odds
Honey, we're the big door prize
We're gonna spite our noses
Right off of our faces
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes.

ReplyDeletehahah oh my, can I be invited to this wedding??? please?
ReplyDeleteLove the pic, very...hmmm...lovey-dovey :)
ReplyDeleteI love that song! It'd be a great first dance.
ReplyDeleteoh, lady.
ReplyDeletewe were in some serious discussions about this song during our wedding planning. we debated at length about if this should've been the song i sang for my husband w/ my guitar at the reception. my mom vetoed (even though it's one of her faves) because there were some teenagers + grandparents present. so we put it on our wedding cd instead.
and jamie from desert fete danced to it at her wedding ;)
That would be an awesome duet. I wonder if I know anyone who would go for it...
ReplyDeletehaha. yeah, we ended up choosing it as our "last dance" song. it was in such heavy rotation during our engagement that it remains special. that and whenever people asked about first dance songs we would play this for them.
ReplyDelete@Naurnie, if we had heard it before we got married it would have been the song we played while we signed the register. The perfect time for a slightly risqué song as most people aren't going to be listening too hard but you will always know you played THE BEST SONG EVER during your wedding ceremony.
ReplyDeleteOne of my dreams for our wedding was for D and I to learn how to play this and perform it instead of a first dance (me on mandolin, him on bass). We sorta got engaged at a John Prine concert, you see...and that song is pretty much ABOUT us. Alas it didn't happen, but we still listen to the song a LOT.
ReplyDeleteI witnessed John Prine sing this live and it has been one of my favourite of his songs since! Too funny.
ReplyDeletehaha! so cute. But I'm REALLY loving that picture!
ReplyDeletethis song has very strong ex-boyfriend memories for me, but I love it all the same.
ReplyDeleteBWAH HA HA. I second the motion, Anna Elena. ^
ReplyDeletep.s. Her shoes match his tie. HAWT!
- Autumn at favorsbyserendipity
HA, this was our friends wedding theme song. Not sure the ceremony but throughout the entire weekend and top on their wedding CD.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun song for 2 friends to do as a duet or even for the bride and groom to do as a duet.
ReplyDeleteLet's see if I can get someone special to sing this!
ReplyDeleteVery cute! I hadn't heard that before...
ReplyDeleteThis was the recessional at our wedding three years ago. The processional was Question by the Old 97s. In with the sweet & romantic and out with the fun & ready for the reception. The best was the sign language interpreter signing "caught him once and he was sniffing my undies".
ReplyDeleteGood brief and this mail helped me alot in my college assignement. Thank you on your information.
ReplyDeleteSo loving that pic, everything just looks so right about it... Are the couple a real couple or models?
