What do you daydream about?

By Tracie Taylor

A friend asked this recently, on realising that she spends most of her daydreaming time daydreaming about childcare, its possible permutations and eventualities and their impact on her time.

At the moment I just don't have the mental capacity to focus on any one daydream for more than about 4 seconds, preferring to flit from thought to thought, only returning to one when I've completely forgotten what I was thinking in the first place.

Here though, in rough descending order of frequency and duration, are the things that currently occupy my thoughts, when I am awake enough to have them.

* Nye and I lying on a deserted beach somewhere warm with kids who are happily occupied playing with sand and shells and someone on hand to bring us vast quantities of food.
* More generally, just food: What I would like to eat and how nice it would be to have someone to cook it for me.
* storage: for books, toys, kitchen implements, bathroom ephemera, booze.
* living in London. (Subcategories: the galleries to visit, the friends to spend time with, the food to eat.)
* A better wardrobe.
* having Good Hair.

I conclude that my life is lacking sunshine, London and somewhere to keep all my crap, and that I need to eat more and book an appointment with a hairdresser.

What do you daydream about and what does it tell you about your life right now?

  1. I think I daydream about a lot of the same things as you. Good food, preferably cooked for me, not by me. And someone to lie around with on a beautiful warm beach in the sunshine.

    My dreams at night are a whole different matter. Recently they have involved buying antiques from old women whilst hiding from the Russian Maffia, and opening bags of coins from the bank only to find that they are full of large bright green hairy caterpillars which grow at an astonishing rate. Much more vivid than my daydreams....

  3. Today I have been sitting at my desk all day daydreaming about filing and sanding. I guess that means I am excited about how my new collection will come out, because I don't really like sanding and filing. Also, my job is really boring and I am feeling anxious about wasting time.

    1. Filing and sanding! I can honestly say I've rarely daydreamed about filing and sanding. (Not never, but rarely.)

    2. It is oddly relaxing. But still bizarre. I guess I should work on some better daydreams. Like being a ninja or something.

  4. Also food. Though I definitely don't need to eat more.
    Crumpets especially.
    How to hang art and photos on my walls.
    And mainly, when is the right time to try for a second child, given that I can barely cope with one but am weirdly broody since my son hit 19 months. Laura, London.
    Ps my capsule dream wardrobe also contains many toast items. That's why it shall remain in my dreams xxxxx

  7. What an amazing picture - absolutely love it
    Urm, I dream about drinking wine without getting a stare from my mother (she's currently in-between houses and living with us)
    I dream about sleep - I'm an insomniac and have been for 8 years so that's definitely my number 1 :)
    Great post

  8. In the last several weeks daydreams include:

    • quitting my job and going to work on an organic farm
    • going to work as an apprentice and then becoming a chef
    • becoming an invitation/party designer/planner
    • having enough money to design/decorate my new place just the way I want it
    • what it would be like to be married
    • what it might look like to have a better network of people in my life and who and what those people I would surround myself might be.
    • holiday home decoration. Birch trees indoors. Twinkle lights. My first ever very own christmas tree.
    • meals and cooking and food and cooking and food. Recipes. Tasting. Cooking.
    • how I can be a better aunt and equip my nephew for important things in the future and help make him into a well rounded boy and a good man.

    So many thoughts lately. No wonder I'm not getting enough done during actual work days.

    1. What a wonderful list, thank you for sharing it with us. And daydreams are important, JUST as important as doing actual work, I swear.

  9. Finally being able to live in the tiny house on wheels my husband and I are building, having a big huge garden, land with a view, and spending three months out of the year living in Vienna and/or Paris. We're halfway to the tiny house. I also daydream about if I could live only in grey t-shirts, jeans, and scarves without becoming bored with my wardrobe in five minutes.

    On an note more related to your list, you should watch the documentary "Good Hair." Well worth your time.

  11. Well at night I dream that I come home from work to find that the rabbit's ears have fallen off. No one listens to me when I point out this is a problem.

    I day dream about more prosaic matters such as;

    A bathroom with cleverly displayed art, and no mold.
    Bringing the design aesthetic from the Ubiquitous Chip into my home.
    Having rabbits that only poop in their litter tray.
    A job that where I can work on employment law related matters, and do recruitment.

  13. I daydream about quitting my job and about us moving to Vancouver where we will wear anoraks and hike and kayak and the like. I'm not sure why Vancouver particularly, but there it is.

    also, the Euromillions. I'm not really proud of that (thinking myself above such grubby concerns as money, naturally.) but my imaginary win does in turn facilitate my imaginary job quitting and emigration.

    and running. I remember being fit, and now mostly I settle for nostalgic mental circuits of the river as I eat caramel wafers.

    and caramel wafers.

    1. My daydreams are quite similar. A Euromillions win (even a partial one) facilitating job quitting and a move to London/New York/Seattle (maybe all three, it is A LOT of money). Otherwise the daydreams are of babies, a home of our own with enough space and walls we can paint any colour we like, and a job that doesn't feel too much like a job.

    2. yes! Imaginary exercise. I forgot about imaginary exercise. And lottery wins, they creep in there too. We went through a 'daydreaming about moving to Vancouver' phase a few years ago, now we're deeply entrenched in our 'dayrdreaming about moving to london' phase.

  14. For the last 2 years I've dreamed about quitting my job which finally has come true (well, end of contract, not be renewed) so now I am free...my daydreams are random, buying a flat, what should I get, where and when will it happen... I daydream about starting to make soap again..about all the freedom I will have this summer and all the places we can go...I daydream about the past, mistakes and choices I have made and how I would do things differently or even the same... I daydream about getting my blog up and running after a very long hiatus, I daydream about repainting the flat but don't quite ever get around to doing it...

  15. I've been daydreaming about my own business for the past year and a half, it's finally happening now! Lately my daydreaming has been about how to update my boring kitchen. But I'm gonna dream a bit more before I make it a reality!
