A wee cottage

Remember last month, when I was blue (or grey)? And I said we were going on an impromptu trip? I never did show you the pictures or tell you about our little adventure in the Scottish countryside.

It was nice. We stayed in a little cottage, a pretty little cottage with white walls, fancy art, lots of books, a gimongous atlas, feathery soft pillows, tweety birds by the window and the loveliest bath in all of the world.

We were quiet, doing very little but lying around (mostly in the bath) or sitting with the great-big-worth-more-than-our-car atlas planning the route we'd take around the world in a sailing boat one day.

We ate yummy food, simple food like pasta and sauce with big bars of chocolate for pudding and we sat at the table and we didn't have the radio on and the tv was silent and there were no puters and emails went unread and it was heaven. And then, the night before we left, when it finally stopped raining, we went for a walk to the beach, through fields of many rabbits (and the occassional rahter large cow) and we watched the sun dip below an ocean that we dreamed of bobbing away on one not too distant day.

dot dot dash

So different from Keats carved in yellow limestone yet I would hang them on my wall side my side and I would sit and read the words and I would smile.

And this week's love of typography continues...

Love letters...

"Letters are our culture. We carvers take out pieces of rock and it's the air we leave behind that is the expression of our culture. What you take away becomes the letter. By rearranging what nature gives us, we put out thought into it and make it a word and this world you make could last thousands of years, This cut word will carry our cultural choices into the future."

I read an article in World of Interiors, it reminded me of all I love about words and typography, all that is important about the choices we make to use the words that we do. It was about The Cardozo Kindersley Workshop, a stone carvers workshop in Cambridge, England and I've been carrying around the words that Lida Lope Cardozo Kindersley chose to describe the importance of the carved word in the part of my brain that holds ideas and inspirations for the last week.

merekats and muffins

Last week there was a birthday. The birthday involved pancakes and polecats, picnics and porcupines, muffins and marmosets, presents and piglets and a husband another year older. I like his new age, it's a pleasing number, very satisfying. I think he likes it too.

We also saw a raccoon who was terribly pretty, wild cats who were a little scary, a giant pig who was absolutely bloody terrifying, porcupines who were prickly and stripy and invited comparisons to a birthday boy's wife, otters who could have done with a little ritalin, great big huge bunnies the size of adolescent labradors, wee tiny monkeys with funny faces, pygmy crocodiles who really didn't look that pygmy to me, a hedgehog, dormice with furry tails, feisty chickens who liked to escape, a snowy owl or two, lemurs (I really loved them. King Julian is my favourite cartoon character of all time. He may in fact be my spirit animal incarnate) and lots of other fluffy things and furry things and scaly things and winged things and smelly things and noisy things and baby things and grumpy things and friendly things and scary things and things I wanted to steal away and put in my pocket beacuse I'm sure they and The Rabbit would get along just fine and and and and.... aminals galore.

Then we went and ate curry, yummy yummy south Indian curry. Lots of it. And then we came home, sleepy and tired and happy because there had been aminals and presents and food galore.

dozing....

I didn't really mean to fall asleep. I just meant to close my eyes for a minute, to have a wee rest over the weekend. But before I knew it it was Wednesday and although I was pretty sure I'd been awake the whole time five days were gone with little to show for them but a glorious sense of sleepiness. And so I wriggled a little, fluffed up my pillow and fell asleep again. Night night.
