raining, pouring...

bye bye bun

On Thursday morning The Bunny died. He got sick on Wedneday evening, by bed time he couldn't walk and by the morning he could barely move at all. We thought he was about five years old, but by the vet's reckoning he was closer to ten. Our daft and childlike bunny became an old man overnight.

The Rabbit's sad, he won't come out of his hutch. The Bunny stole his food, peed on his head, humped him mercilessly and demanded all of the attention but he was a rabbit, which is infinitely better than a human. And he was his friend.

We buried him where the wild things grow. Where bunnies roam free and edible things appear freely out of the ground. He would have liked that.

When we went to use the picnic basket yesterday we discovered that we had left an apple in it after our last trip. Which would explain why it so often had a rabbit sitting on it over the last fortnight. We also discovered that the wicker work had been chewed off one of the handles. The Bunny has left a path of destruction in his wake, a hundred nibbles to remind us of how much he meant to us.

  16. Oh Peony.. Too sad,too sad. So horrid when we lose a pet. For some reason it made me think of Watership Down film when the rabbit ascends into the sky with the god bunny and then floats away into the ether. Maybe that's where he has gone too..

  18. I'm so sorry about your Bunny. I've had a number or beloved pets die over the years (always from old age thankfully) but it never gets easier. I hope your Rabbit is okay soon.

  19. I am sad for you. I miss my little Holland Lop I had...we had to put it to sleep because it had a stroke (who knew bunnies could?). I love all the pictures of your little Bunny.

  20. Awwww so sad. I have 2 rabbits. The oldest one if about 7 years. I heard they only live 6 so I have always been kinda worried about him. You said yours was around 10, hmm I guess I don't need to be so scared anymore.

  25. I'm so sad to hear of your loss. I too am a bunny lover, and I had a little boy bunny named Lupe. He played with my cats and ate out of their cat food dish. I am positive he thought he was a cat. I had him for five years, and one morning I went to greet him, and he had passed. I know how you must feel right now, and my thoughts are with you.

  26. Aw, sweetie, so sorry. We have lost beloved pets too, and I still miss them. But the memories are so sweet, and they enrich our lives so much in the time they are with us.... Hugs to you and the Boy.

  28. "a hundred nibbles to remind us of how much he meant to us."

Isn't that how it is? Isn't that how it always, always is? Path of destruction or no, it's always the nibbles. The little. Tiny. Nibbles.

    Love and kisses.
